Cash (preferably Bulgarian Leva, but also US dollars or Euros) are the way to go Strandja. Other currencies and travellers cheques are accepted in the exchange bureaus and the banks in the bigger towns but not for day-to-day expenses and not in the villages. Credit cards are not accepted almost anywhere in the mountain. If your trip includes a stay in a major city like Sofia or Burgas prior to arrival in Strandja you can as well find a bank that will advance cash on Visa, MasterCard, Diner's or American Express. Credit card advances through ATMs are possible, but limited to bigger towns.

Tipping is a normal practice in restaurants ands pubs with waiters but not in the self-service facilities. The amount that is usually expected is 10% of the bill you are paying.
