THE PEOPLEAncient HistoryANCIENT HISTORY /
Around the 5th century BC the mountain was inhabited by the thracian tribes "Tini" and "Asti" who were part of the Odrisk kingdom.
The heritage of these ancient times is represented in Strandja mainly by remnants of thracian fortresses, stone sanctuaries, dolmens and tiles picturing a thracian horse rider (Heros). They all show that in this period the religion was strongly connected with the sun, and the light was worshipped as a God.
The remnants of two Thracian dolmens are located very close to Malko Tarnovo in the places called Mishkova Niva and Propada.
The mountain has also preserved the ruins of number of early Byzantinian fortresses, element of the magnificent defence system of emperor Justinian the Great (527-565 AC) built to protect his territories against attacks of barbaric tribes. The fortresses are ruined due to the longlasting war conflicts between Bulgaria and Byzantium.
The museum complexes of most of the cities keep material monuments of various historical ages and are worth seeing by anyone with interest in history.
