| The name of the village means "the maiden's church" and like many other Strandja villages' names originates from a story. The story tells about the self-sacrifice of a beautiful maiden whom Redjeb Pasha, a Turkish dignitary, wanted to marry. He made a generous offer to buy her off. Meanwhile the village people had started building a church and were short on money. Knowing that, the maiden agreed to the Turk's proposal and had the village use the ransom for the completion of the church. Selfless as she was, she had her shadow "built into" the construction to give it additional strength and because of that died shortly afterwards. Momina Tzurkva used to be renowned for the beauty, handiness and resounding voices of its maids. The village still keeps rituals and traditions form those times. |
